Discussion Board 2: Integumentary Grant!
You serve on a committee for a charitable foundation that will vote and decide how to fund grant requests for research on diseases of the integumentary system. This research could lead to better understanding of disease mechanisms or new therapies/interventions. The applications for the grants have been narrowed down to three choices.
Out of these choices, you may only choose one to vote for:
1. Alopecia Areata
2. Scleroderma
3. Psoriasis
Which option will you choose and try to convince others to vote for? There is no perfect choice available and all three choices have strong grant applications.
Through this two-part discussion with your classmates, you will state your choice, explain the normal/standard anatomy of the system the disease impacts the most, explain how the disease disrupts this system, and why you chose to vote this way using appropriate and sufficient evidence.
You will then respond to your classmates’ posts to create an interactive conversation involving debating the diseases, comparing evidence, adding detail, asking questions, brainstorming treatment ideas, etc.
Please remember that all of these diseases have merit so keep discussions friendly, or at least civil!
Part 1: Initial Post (Worth up to 50 points)
• Length: 250-500 words
• State and explain your choice. When stating the evidence, consider the challenges that others may have to your evidence and how you could counter those respectful challenges.
• You will need to use at least 3 reputable scientific references to support your post (not including your textbook). Reputable sources= peer reviewed scientific journal articles, accredited websites, or books. Google, Wikipedia, etc. are not acceptable sources.
Part 2: Responses (Worth up to 50 points)
Comment on at least 2 classmate’s discussion submissions.
• Each comment must be 150-200 words!
o Evaluate their post
o You are either adding more evidence to a post that made the same choice as you or challenging another choice (respectfully) with evidence.
o Offer questions or substantive responses to what is said. Offer Research and share information that backs or refutes a point being made (“Good Jobs”, or “I agree” are NOT allowed as your response!!).
See last page for charts to use to organize your thoughts. This is for you and NOT to be handed in.
How will I be graded?
The rubric to this assignment is located in the same spot on Blackboard where this guideline is located, as a separate document. Take a look prior to starting the assignment and let your instructor know if you have any questions regarding expectations.
What kind of sources should you use?
Your information must be credible, accurate, and well supported by evidence. The best sources of information are the research journals and the books as well as webpages maintained by professional societies and organizations. Search for articles and academic material should start with the electronic databases of libraries such as PubMed (opens new window) or other such resources.
Don’t forget to CITE!
You must cite all sources. Citation format must be MLA or APA (Visit the Purdue Owl Writing Lab (opens new window) for instructions on proper formatting)
Examples: In science we primarily use APA. These are basic examples of common citations. Please see the Purdue Owl (linked above) for more details/examples.
In-text citation: When you are paraphrasing from an author, so whenever you a
taking information form a source and putting it in your own words.
According to Jones (1998), APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners.
In-text citation quote: If you are taking a quote, you need to include the page number:
According to Jones (1998), “students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time” (p. 199).
Reference Page: At the end of the document, you want to make sure you reference all of the sources you took information from.

Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Use the U.S. Department of Justice website to find and research four police departments and their relationships with their communities.
Write a 1,250-1,500-word comparative analysis of those four departments and their interactions with their communities. Include the following:
Discuss both the negative and positive relationships that these departments have had with their communities.
From a Christian worldview, how could some policies have reflected better ethical decision making that would have enhanced the relationship between the police and their communities? (C.1.4)
How do ethical issues that are faced within the community directly affect the relationship with the police?
Discuss the best practices and behaviors for enhancing community-police relations. Describe which police departments (of the four) would benefit the most from specific best practices. (C.5.5)
Be sure to cite three to five relevant scholarly sources in support of your content. Use only sources found at the GCU Library, government websites/legal case sites or those provided in Class Resources.
Prepare this assignment according to the guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

In chapter 11 we study many of the structures of the brain and spinal cord. Over the course of human history the brain
and spinal cord have been misunderstood in the study of disease and illnesses. For example, frontal lobotomies were
routinely performed in the mid-to-late 20th century to treat such illnesses as schizophrenia, depression, back aches,
anger management issues, hyperactivity and many more. The patient would be rendered unconscious via an electric
shock and then probes would be inserted into the orbits of their skull. The probe would be moved back and forth to
destroy the brain tissue in that area. The practice of lobotomies has been outlawed in the United States, (except for very
specific reasons), but not before tens of thousands of people had their brains butchered by traveling doctors. For this
discussion take one of these structures we have beet talking about in chapter 11 and research historical and or current
medical procedures that were meant to “cure” a disease. In your post address issues like, what the illness was, what
the treatment was meant to do, why people used it, why it was bad, etc…… Your post should not exceed 300 words and
must have appropriate PA references.

APA 7th edition Title page:
This is a separate page by itself, with the following information centered in the middle of the page: course title, paper title, student’s name, instructor’s name, and date.
Description of Pathology:
Start the paper on a new page.
In this section, you will describe the pathology (statistics about it, background information, etc.). Give as much information as you can about it but be sure it is relevant information and not just filler. It should be a comprehensive introductory section of the condition in one to two paragraphs.
Normal anatomy of the major body system affected: In this section, you will describe what is considered normal anatomy for your particular pathophysiology. For example, if you are discussing a disease related to the brain, explain what is normal for the brain from an anatomical standpoint. You should show comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental concepts and communicate information using scientific vocabulary. There should be little to no discussion of the condition itself in this section.
Normal physiology of the major body system affected: In this section, you will be discussing physiology. Keep in mind that when describing physiology, it isn’t enough to merely provide a list of functions of the body system (Ex: Neurons send signals throughout the body), instead, you need to be able to describe how it does it. The how is the physiology. There should be little to no discussion of the condition itself in this section
Mechanism of Pathophysiology: This section is likely going to be the most in-depth and longest section. In this section, you will explain your particular pathophysiology from a scientific standpoint. In the previous two sections, you explained what is considered normal, in this section, you should describe what the pathophysiology is doing that is causing these issues, how the normal anatomy & physiology is affected/different in a person with your condition. You should show a thorough understanding of the anatomical and physiological changes contributing to the disease. Some good keywords to search for when doing your research might be “Pathology of __________”, Pathophysiology of __________.”
Prevention: In this section, you will explain how your pathophysiology could be prevented. This should outline possible prevention protocols, or clearly indicate if none is available based on the current scientific literature.
Treatment: In this section, you will explain how your pathophysiology is commonly treated. Provide possible treatment protocols for the condition based on current scientific literature. Be sure to bring in nursing relevant information and how you might be involved in the treatment of the condition.
Conclusion: Finally you should summarize your findings. All good research papers should include a conclusion where you wrap up and summarize all of the important points made in your paper.
References:
As with the Title page, this should be a separate page by itself.
All references should be included in correct and complete APA format.
All references must be cited appropriately in the paper using APA-style in-text citations.
A minimum of three reputable sources are required for this assignment.
