Supplemental protein shakes, of which there are many varieties (bodybuilders will be familiar with this one)

Here are more dietary trends for you to choose from. Some of these directly involve protein intake directly, some only partially address protein. Once again, choose one of the following to expand on for your main post and reply to classmates who chose different topics than your own. As usual, after the basic requirements are met, feel free to post additional comments.
Topics
Supplemental protein shakes, of which there are many varieties (bodybuilders will be familiar with this one)
Vegan diets (address protein quality plus other issues associated with vegan diets). Compare to vegetarian if appropriate.
Juice and other types of liquid-only “Cleanses”
Does a high protein diet have any benefit or can it be risky?
This last one usually refers to balanced macronutrient intake, but it’s a popular topic: Intermittent Fasting, yes or no?

1. Create an original, well-balanced menu for 1 day (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks). Your menu should include at least 25 grams of fiber AND less than 300 milligrams of cholesterol for the entire day. The menu must:
Include accurate portion sizes – For example, 1.5 cups of Cheerios — do not say “1 bowl” or “1 serving”
Have realistic amounts and types of foods – would someone actually eat what your menu recommends?
Be specific — tell what kind of the product it is, indicate the brand. For example, yogurt can be fat free or whole milk, regular or Greek, with different amounts of sugar or sugar substitutes added. Be specific about the details. Is the coffee black, does it have sugar? What is your oatmeal made with? Is there a sauce or anything else added to the rice? Make sure to include all the details.
Have balance and variety – make sure you include adequate amounts from all food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy and/or high calcium foods, protein foods (animal and/or vegetable proteins)
Identify how many grams of fiber and how many milligrams of cholesterol is in EACH food item. I suggest you do this in a chart form (see below example and use the attached form).
Provide the total grams of fiber and the total milligrams of cholesterol for your entire day’s menu.
Be sure to provide the references you used as your source for the fiber and cholesterol contents of the foods. Note: If you used nutrition information from the product package, indicate this with an asterisk (*).
2. Reflect whether it was easy to create a menu with the desired amounts of fiber and cholesterol. What were your challenges?

Are they labeled?

You can download the document, fill in your answers and then save it to your computer.
The assignment should be submitted here when
you have completed it.
Part 1: View Tutorial
Go to the following website by copying and pasting it into your browser:
https://medlineplus.gov/webeval/webeval.html (Links to an
external site.)
Scroll down and Select “Start the Tutorial”
You will be scrolling through the slideshow from Introduction to
Conclusion. Please read each slide carefully.
Part 2: Website Evaluation
You will be evaluating a website (that you select) and answering the questions listed below. The words ‘explain’ and ‘discuss’ are used
many times in the questions. Simply listing the points given in the tutorial is not showing that you understand the points. Each point needs an explanatory sentence or two to show that you have engaged with the activity. Please number your answers and include the questions
for your submission.
Since this is one of our first assignments a few points on writing are called for. Some students write a great deal while others barely write at all. The number of words does not always determine the quality of the writing – However, if you want to be eligible for full credit on
assignments you need to answer questions thoroughly. You need to write enough to show engagement, ideas, critical thinking –
demonstrating that you understand.
I encourage you to read the instructions and answer all questions completely. If you want to be
eligible for full credit, please follow the directions and complete the assignment thoroughly
Instructions
Use the following question list to evaluate a website you are considering using for nutrition or health information or that you found while
browsing the internet. You cannot choose a .gov, .edu, or .org sites as we already know they are reliable. In addition, DO NOT CHOOSE
WebMD, MayoClinic, NutrientData, LiveStrong, EatRight or Medical News etc. Look instead for a site that discusses a topic in nutrition you are interested in. Maybe it is allergies, or heart health, or proteins for muscles or a disease or supplement you want to know about. Make sure it is nutrition related.
Once you have found an interesting site then you may need to ‘back up’ pages till you find the Home Page for that site and do your
reporting based on the overall website (not just an article). If you are unsure if the site you are interested in is an appropriate one then
send me a message. Report your findings with detailed examples for each point on the question list (below) so there will be several
sentences for each point. Then give your opinion of the website based on your findings and conclude with what you have learned from
the video and this activity. Include the URL to the website you evaluate so I can review it. This is the section where I see if you can utilize
the information learned to evaluate a website. Answer each question fully. These are not “Yes” and “No” questions – please answer with a thorough response/explanation. (Please maintain original numbering of questions)
* Question List:
URL for the Website Evaluated (include full url here): ____________________________
1. Who is in charge of the Web site? Discuss.
2. Why are they providing the site/information? Discuss.
3. Can you contact them? How?
4. Where does the money to support the site come from? Discuss. (If you cannot find this information – state how you think the website is funded)
5. Does the site have advertisements? Are they labeled? What are your thoughts about them?
6. Where does the information on the site come from? How can you tell if this information is trustworthy or questionable?
7. How is content selected? Discuss.
8. Do experts review the information that goes on the site? Who are the experts? What are their credentials? Why is it important to have
an editorial or review board?
9. Does the site avoid unbelievable or emotional claims? Discuss.
10. Is the site up-to-date? When was it last updated? Are you comfortable with this date?
11. Does the site ask for your personal information? Explain.
12. Do they tell you how your personal information will be used? Discuss. Are you comfortable with how it will be used? What are some
privacy issues you should consider when navigating a website?
13. Explain how you would use what you learned from the “Evaluating Internet Health Information” tutorial to determine if a social media
page or account (on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.…) is providing reliable or unreliable information.
14. What is your opinion of the website you chose based on your findings of this evaluation/checklist?
15. Conclusion: Do you feel that you are a more informed consumer now that you have finished this activity? Discuss. What are two
valuable points you have learned from the tutorial and this activity? Explain.

Choose a supplement from the list provided
Using the Internet, find a picture of a product that contains your supplement, including a label (try to find a product that only contains your supplement).
Type answers to the questions using 12-font, single-spaced.
DO NOT plagiarize or place sentences in “quotations”. Use your own words.
Pay attention to the WORD COUNT for the reaction paper and the research abstract.
You need to cite your sources for each section that is indicated.
Use the sources suggested below before you do a general Internet search!!!
Do NOT use the websites of the product you are evaluating (or any manufacturer’s websites)
No particular format is necessary for your citations. List the sources you used to answer each section. If it’s a website, you can just copy-n-paste the url.
You can combine all required parts into one Word doc or you can submit them in pieces: 1) Your paper; 2) a picture of the supplement and the complete ingredient list; and 3) The abstract from the peer-reviewed journal article you summarized.
*** Use the SportDiscus Database to find your peer-reviewed article – access through the electronic WCU Library (do not use Medline, CINAHL, etc.)

Good morning, I am Mr. Oliver over at the Senior Center. As you might know, we provide meals at lunchtime for the seniors who use our center. This includes healthy senior citizens as well as those who attend our adult daycare for memory-impaired senior activities. Even some of our healthy seniors have diets that restrict things like salt and cholesterol. What we need is some help with planning diets that would be healthy and appropriate for all of our seniors. We serve lunch every day and also provide coffee, tea, and snacks throughout the day. I am sure you know all about diets for seniors and restrictions for those with memory impairment who have trouble swallowing.
If you could plan one week worth of menus for any of the following:
1 ) healthy seniors without any restriction
2) low salt diet
3) memory-impaired seniors who have swallowing difficulties.
Many of our seniors live alone and don’t cook for themselves. Of course, some of them get dinners from Meals on Wheels, but others rely on this lunch for their major meal of the day. The suggested recipes should be healthy, nutritious, and easy to prepare in case they would like to try them out at home.
